About AMMA Therapy®

Please note: Our AMMA Therapy® program is now approved by the State of Arizona Board of Acupuncture Examiners and the NCBTMB.

AMMA Therapy, Asian Bodywork, Tina Sohn
Mrs. Tina Sohn
AMMA Therapy® is a 5,000 year old system of healing, brought to the United States from Korea by the late Mrs. Tina Sohn, descendant of a royal line of TCM healers and a healing sensitive who could directly experience the energy of her patients.  Along with her late husband, Dr. Robert Sohn, she founded the Wholistic Health Center in Syosset, NY, the largest center of its kind on the east coast.  The Sohns also authored what is said to be the most comprehensive text on Asian bodywork.

AMMA Therapy® offers your clients a complete and holistic form of therapy, incorporating a specific bodywork protocol, recommendations based on the traditional Chinese diet, and concepts from Taoist cosmology, Qi Gong and T'ai Chi Chuan.  The effectiveness of an AMMA Therapy® session relies on the development of the practitioner, and so a great deal of focus is given to enhancing the practitioner's strength, awareness and sensitivity skills.

AMMA Therapy® is based on the Eight Principles of TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) and Five Element Theory.  The focus on Five Element Theory allows for the consideration of the vital role of the emotions in healing.  An AMMA Therapy® session completely embraces the notion of treating body, mind, and spirit.  Traditional assessment tools are used such as tongue and pulse assessment.

At its most basic level, AMMA Therapy® addresses structural imbalances such as neck and back pain.  At the advanced level, it benefits conditions such as sinusitis, asthma, digestive problems, PMS, menopause, low immune function, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, and headaches.

A great deal of focus is given to the postural alignment of the practitioner and so AMMA Therapy® helps the practitioner learn how to avoid injury and prolong their career.  The practitioner is also taught how to draw and direct energy from the Dan Tien (the hara), and so when done properly, AMMA Therapy® has the ability to energize the therapist as well as the client.  As such, most practitioners can give more treatments in a day as compared to other techniques.  Unique to AMMA Therapy® is the fact that it is performed on a standard-height massage table, and is therefore easily adaptable to the spa setting, clinical practice, or the hospital setting.  It is also easier on the body as you are standing in postures derived from T'ai Chi.

AMMA Therapy® is not only taught to acupuncturists and massage therapists, but is also taught to holistic nurses who have successfully integrated this healing art into the hospital setting.  Among hosptials where AMMA Therapy® has been introduced are South Nassau Communities Hospital and Bellevue Hospital in New York, and Scottsdale Health Care in Arizona.

"Rapid technological development has brought with it a loss of the ancient wisdom of man's part in the ecosphere.  In recent years we have been forced to reckon with the tragic effects of this loss.  We now face a collective crisis in human health, evidenced by the appearance of new drug-resistant infectious organisms and the enormous rise in degenerative disease processes..... By looking at life microscopically, something was lost.  By losing the awareness of the relationship between microcosmos and macrocosmos, scientists lost sight of the miracle of a living organism."
